Motherboard Essentials

Motherboard is the foremost computer part that you should consider when assembling a PC. It is popularly called the heart of the computer since all components are connected to it. Basically, it relays information from and to all components. So when you assemble a PC, buy the motherboard first.

Buying a motherboard can be easy and convenient since they are already sold at a motherboard online store. All you have to do is list all your motherboard requirements and conveniently shop at a motherboard online store. If you’re unsure of your motherboard requirements, below is a rundown of the usual requirements.

1. Size. A motherboard is available in different sizes. If you are buying a motherboard to replace an old defective one, then be sure that you buy the same size as your old one; your motherboard may not fit inside your existing computer case. But if you are buying a motherboard for a new assembly, then the size factor will depend on the components that you wish to install.

2. Processor Type and Socket. The motherboard socket is where the processor is plugged-in. It used to be that processors such as Intel and AMD were able to share the same socket. But now, after a few years of improving processors, each brand of processor has its own socket type determined by the number of pins on it. Basically, you won’t be able to transfer from one brand of processor to another without replacing the motherboard as well. Even though replacing motherboard can be easy through a motherboard online store, the price tag can always cause a pinch. So if you want to avoid the unnecessary expenses of replacing a non-defective motherboard, carefully choose a processor that will match your CPU needs and use.

3. CPU components. The CPU components that should be specifically considered when buying a motherboard are: hard drive, memory and power supply. Memory cards are continually advancing and as they advance, their sockets advance drastically as well. The DDR for instance, the most commonly used memory card has 184 pins while the newly released DDR-2 has 240 pins. In the memory card market, the older version is usually phased out when a new version is released. So naturally, when your older version of memory card needs replacement, you may also need to replace the motherboard. This can be very frustrating especially if your motherboard does not have any defects. Therefore, to avoid being in this kind of situation, buy a motherboard that is compatible with the recent memory card versions.

The hard drive has more or less a similar story with memory cards. There are two types of hard drives available in the market: ATA and SATA, ATA being the older version and SATA the recent version. Recent versions of motherboards support both types but there are already quite a number that support only SATA. Manufacturers of the latter type may be anticipating an ATA phase out, so you may want to go with their anticipation. But just to be on the safe side, buy a motherboard that supports both HD types.

As CPU components advance, their power supply requirements advance as well. The typical motherboard power supply pins are in 20s and 24s. Moreover, newly launched processors, such as those from Intel and AMD, have separate power supply pins to support their high clock speed. So when you buy a motherboard for a new CPU assembly, consider the power supply requirements of your components.

How to Choose a Gaming Motherboard

Motherboard is the platform where all other components are installed on. It’s the part that makes the devices communicate with each other and work together. It’s an important task to choose the best possible affordable motherboard when building a gaming computer. This article will be discussing on how to achieve this goal.

CPU Socket Type

This is one of the most important factors and choosing which socket type you are going to use beforehand eases choosing the motherobard. For instance, choosing an AMD CPU confines you to motherboards with those sockets AMD products use. Other CPUs won’t be fitting into that motherboard.

Because there are a couple socket types from both Intel and AMD, there are totally about four different sockets. This means that from all the desktop computer motherboards, you can use a fraction of them in your computer building project.

This may seem irrelevant to choosing a motherboard. In actual fact, this is the most important thing you need to do before selecting a motherboard. The reason being that the type of CPU will determine the type of motherboard you need. For example, if you choose an Intel CPU, then you have to get the socket 775 motherboard or else the CPU won’t fit into the motherboard. Deciding on the type of CPU will help you to make a better choice when choosing the best gaming motherboard.

Memory Support

Your motherboard will be able to take a specific kind of memory. Today the common types are DDR2 and DDR3 from which DDR3 is the fastest in the market. Another thing to note is the highest speed of RAM the motherboard supports. Some of them can support only DDR2 800 Mhz memory while others can use DDR3 1300 Mhz. On top of all that you can have a specific amount of memory which is told in the product label.

Many motherboards have support for dual channel meaning that using two, four, six etc. similar memory sticks will enhance the performance because these memory modules can be accessed in parallel. Triple channel is the new version of this technology meaning that you can use three memory modules in parallel.

SLI/Crossfire Ready

SLI and Crossfire technologies mean that you can use two identical graphics cards at the same time to achieve the ultimate graphics performance in games. This feature is still missing from many motherboards but the future games and applications will be more demanding so some day every every motherboard will have it some day. For the sake of your computer’s upgradeability, buying a SLI or Crossfire compatible motherboard is recommended.

Overclocking Features

In case you want to overclock your CPU, your motherboard must allow to change the voltages and the FSB speed.

Other Features

You may want your motherboard to have other features such as ports for USB 3.0, FireWire and so on. Some motherboards contain more features than others so you just have to compare products to know the differences.

Integrated video cards in high-end gaming purposes is totally obsolete because they simply don’t offer enough performance. Integrated sound cards can instead be a good alternative for a separate sound card.

Conclusion

While looking for a gaming motherboard, it’s advisable to do some detective job and compare several boards. Because it’s one of the most important parts of your computer, do your research well and don’t buy the cheapest one.

Things you ought to know before buying a laptop motherboard

The laptop motherboard is the central printed circuit board in a laptop computer. Generally laptop has motherboards of different often irregular sizes. The laptop motherboard is the “adhesive” that hold your laptop computer together. Motherboard is the only part in the laptop which connects to almost all parts of your computer either directly or indirectly. Motherboard comes in many different types, thus choosing a specific motherboard can be quite difficult. They differ in size, function, support, and features. Laptop motherboards are said to be the central component of your computer either desktop or laptop. Laptop motherboards tells you that what hardware your computer can support, making it an important consideration when buying or assembling a computer. Important laptop parts you need to know before buying a laptop motherboard.

Form Factor:

Motherboards can be classified into various categories on the basis of form factor. Form factor is an important specification of motherboards, as the form factor tells what kind of computer case can be used with the motherboard.

ATX Form Factor: These motherboards are for full sized desktops. This is the most common of all, as ATX motherboards can fit many features onto their larger, 12″ x 9.6″ dimensions. In most cases that support ATX motherboards, also support Micro-ATX motherboards as they have similar dimensions, but Micro-ATX is slightly smaller.

Micro-ATX Form Factor: These are for smaller computers. The maximum, and most common size, is 9.6″ x 9.6″. They are generally bought for less expensive computers, that don’t need to many features, or where size is a concern.

CPU Socket:
It is the connection between a CPU and the motherboard. Usually all computers have one socket.CPU are now proprietary, supporting a smaller range of CPUs, from the same manufacturer. Mainly two sockets are used – Intel or AMD.

Chipset: These are the set of two main controllers on the motherboard. The North Bridge and south bridge. Chipset plays an important role in the functioning of laptop motherboard.

Memory Support: One other important feature of a motherboard is its RAM support. It includes RAM, DIMM slots and channel support.

Expansion Slots: Expansion slots allow you to connect various external devices to your laptop e.g. T.V. Tuners, Video cards, network cards and sound cards.

Once you are well aware of the above mentioned laptop motherboard parts, then you can decide which motherboard is worth buying.

Motherboards ? All You Must Know

Motherboard is the main circuit board inside your computer. The motherboard consists of all the controls that run the peripheral devices of the computer including the computer monitor, keyboard and hard drive. Along with these controls the motherboard also contains the connectors for attaching additional peripherals or expansion slots for your computer. In short, the motherboard is like a communication platform that allows the various devices and peripherals attached to the computer to talk to each other and work in sync.

Types of motherboards

Since the motherboard works in sync with the CPU of the computer, the type of motherboard your computer can have is directly related to the type of CPU in your machine. For instance the Socket 478 motherboard goes good with Intel P 4 and the Celeron series CPUs and Socket 939 is used for the AMD64 range of processors. So if you are building or upgrading a computer you will need to pick a motherboard that will support the type of CPU you plan to have or already have. You can also pick up a motherboard & CPU combo, which not only will assure you of the compatibility but will be cheaper than buying the two separately. And consecutively you will have to match all the components of your computer to your motherboard. For instance, if you are looking at upgrading the memory, not anything available would do. You will have to check if the type and size of memory you wish to buy is supported by the motherboard.

Your computer is as good as your Motherboard. The memory can be upgraded, peripherals can be added and your computer can be made more advanced if only your motherboard allows. Thus even if you do not require high tech features in your computer instantly and wish to opt for basics to save cost, opting for a advanced motherboard can be a wise move for you can then keep upgrading your computer as and when.

Readymade v/s assembled

Buying a branded computer or having one assembled is totally a personal choice. With the wide variety in readymade products and the easy availability of components, both the options are perfect for ones specific needs. So while in a readymade computer you can be assured of the service, an assembled device will make it up in the economies it will offer.

If you are looking at buying a motherboard, perhaps the best place to shop for motherboards and other computer components is the internet. The huge selection that is available online is further complimented with the option to compare and find the best product for your needs.

Motherboards in Laptops

They are very specific in their particular functions and try their level best to get the task done in the best possible way. One thing should be kept in mind that a user or the individual cannot modify or change these motherboards. In other words, he or she cannot upgrade them until and unless an expert or a technician suggests or recommends them to do this type of stuff. We can also say that these motherboards in laptops possess and have a kind of direct replacement feature and application in them. They handle and manage the tasks efficiently and effectively. Read on further and you will get to know more about the motherboards in laptops. In this way, all of your queries and questions will surely be solved right away.

It has been noticed and observed that all the motherboards of laptops are being manufactured and produced for a particular and specific model. They cannot be replaced by any model. As we all know that a desktop board contains a large number of slots for the expansion cards. But a situation is some what different in the case of laptop. The motherboard in laptop has no expansion slots. All the functionality parts are being attached and joined on the motherboard itself. Only a single external port will be visible like USB to transfer the important files and folders. All the functions like networking, to control the sound, to control the storage amount etc are being performed by these motherboards in laptops.

The motherboards in laptops control and handle all the central functions in the best way. It is the main circuit board of any laptop. Care and attention should be given while making use of these motherboards in laptops. In the market, a user or an individual will see huge and multiple variety of motherboards like ranging from socket A motherboard, socket 478 motherboard or the motherboard combos. These motherboards will surely and definitely fulfil all the family needs.

Do not go for the cheap motherboards as they are not reliable and long lasting. In the other way round, to replace any motherboard is impossible! This step will only make your system worse and will give disastrous type of results and outcomes. Users will be free from any kind of expansion slots and will not be messed up by any kind of task.
Hence, from the above discussion it is quite and rather clear and evident that the part played by the motherboards in the field of laptops is immense and is now getting a lot attention day by day. It has been highly recommended and suggested by the experts and technicians to adopt only those motherboards which will show best performance. This is a piece of advice from my side which will surely and definitely going to work sooner or later.

Fatal1ty motherboards return by ASRock, hands-on and chat about P67 Professional

www.tweaktown.com Here is one for the books! If you’ve been in the PC scene for some years, you’ll remember back in the day that a guy by the name of Jonathan Wendel or “Fatal1ty” as he is known in the online world by his gaming tag, made some of the best gaming motherboards on the market with the once king we knew as ABIT. Fast forward several years. I get a call from ASRock earlier this week saying that they have a special guest in town and I should come out to their office for an interview. Of course, that special guest from the US was Fatal1ty. He is in town to introduce his new Fatal1ty P67 Professional gaming motherboard exclusively to us here at TweakTown. The Fatal1ty product team decided to work with ASRock after discussions started back at CeBIT in Germany earlier this year. Development has been on-going for the past two or three months and both sides are finally ready to show-off the fruits of their labor and planning. According to Jonathan and his team, ASRock was selected since they consider the Taiwanese motherboard maker “craftsman of motherboards” after inspecting its engineers and products over time. Issues surrounding Computer Motherboard Repair

When repairing a computer motherboard, there are a variety of issues to consider. It is often possible to repair a motherboard to prevent the need to replace it, but there are circumstances in which the motherboard cannot be fixed. Before attempting to repair a motherboard, it is important to determine the cause.

The motherboard can fail if the computer overheats, if one of the memory chips goes bad, or if there is a power surge, especially due to one caused by lightning storms. If the motherboard is poorly made, then it is more likely to fail. It is important to check the motherboard to make sure it is in good shape, and to check the other hardware in the computer to make sure it is working and is not having an adverse effect on motherboard functionality.

When fixing a motherboard, it is important to prevent conducting static charges. After taking the side panel off the computer to get at the motherboard, be sure to make contact with a piece of metal that is not found on the computer. This will prevent static shock and further damage to the motherboard.

At times the motherboard can stop functioning if the plugs or other components become loose. To fix this issue, locate the power supply plug, disconnect it, and then reconnect it, ensuring it is secure. It is also a good idea at this point to inspect the other plugs to be sure they are connected tightly. If they have become loose, your motherboard may not be receiving enough power. If you are updating an old system by installing new add-ons, this may cause a problem as far as power, because your old motherboard may not be equipped to handle the power needs of these new components.

Occasionally pins in the motherboard can become bent. This issue can be fixed by turning off the computer’s power and using pliers or tweezers to bend the pin back into shape. If the pin is broken or it becomes broken when an attempt to bend it is made, then it cannot be fixed. A new motherboard will need to be purchased.
Sometimes the motherboard can become cracked if it is poorly made, or if it was not soldered properly. If the motherboard doesn’t have the right kind of support to ensure flexibility, it may crack when cards are placed into it. If this happens, the motherboard cannot be fixed, and it will need to be replaced.

Developers claim PC games and PS3 being held up by Xbox 360

Xbox 360 is soon witnessing the evening sun with DVD9 and is almost at the dead stage of the road. The main reason behind this is the fact that studios have soon starting realizing that the format of the game is too limiting in space to sprout. They are haunted by the decision of Microsoft to be sticking with their older media format. The disc space, while on one hand, has started affecting the Xbox 360 game version; on the other hand, it is also spreading its effect on other two  gaming versions.

Till date, many Xbox 360 games have been hampered by the DVD9 format, like the famous Gotham Racing 4. In this case, some portions of this lengthy game were to be deleted and removed so that the game could successfully fit into a single DVD. Another game called the Rage will also be needed to modify and undergo deletions here and there to make it adhere to the size for DVD9. This would ultimately affect the impressive hat the game is to throw on the players.

Tim Willits, the lead designer at id Software’s, spoke about Rage and disclosed some really shocking news about the game. According to him, the game Rage was originally designed to many a large number of wastelands that players had to explore, but to fit into a single DVD the developers will have to work around to bring down the number of these wastelands. In fact, the present version of the game has only two wastelands. Another disclosure that came as a big surprise was the fact that similar changes were also made to various PS3 and Pc iterations so that all the versions look similar as far as the story line was concerned.

This is definitely not happy news for many gamers across the world because deletions imply a kmarked reduction in the time of the game play.  Willits further added that the Xbox supports only a data of 6-8 GB, while the PS3 is about 25 GB. Therefore, work in on to make it possible for the game to be loaded into two discs in case of the 360 version.

In case of PC, every Pc comes with its own hard drive. In case of PS3, the game comes with a blu-ray enabled player and a hard drive too. However, the problem lies the Xbox 360 because it has to rely on external hard discs and media choices. One solution that developers see to this problem is to make it mandatory for some hard drives to be installed before allowing players to get their version of these games.
